IL 14 UNITED calls on Representative Randy Hultgren to address the public health crisis of gun violence by proposing legislative solutions recommended by experts in the field, supporting funding for research, returning the $14,000 in donations he has received from the National Rifle Association since 2010, and holding an open town hall on the issue to hear the concerns of constituents.
The congressman’s recent legislative history, which receives an “A” grade from the NRA, reflects his willingness to protect gun dealers and donors rather than the average constituent.
- Representative Hultgren co-sponsored the Concealed Carry Reciprocity bill (H.R. 38), which makes concealed carry permits valid across state lines. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, this “would effectively turn the weakest state’s laws into nationwide laws.” This bill passed in the House and is now in the Senate.
- Representative Hultgren opposed an executive order issued by President Obama that, according to the Northwest Herald, expanded “the definition of who is in the business of selling firearms under federal law.” The order primarily required more gun sellers to be licensed, including those who sell on the internet, and therefore required them to conduct background checks on purchasers. Hultgren responded “Americans shouldn’t have to bring their lawyer to a gun show, nor should they fear a knock on the door because they sold or traded legal firearms to their relatives or other gun collectors.”
Representative Hultgren’s support of the gun lobby is not new. In this video from 2012, he proclaims his support for concealed carry and his love for the NRA.
In light of the rising number of gun violence incidents in this country, which have led to the injury or death of 478 children in 2018, IL 14 UNITED believes that Representative Hultgren must reconsider his priorities and fulfill a moral obligation to take action against gun violence.
IL 14 UNITED is a coalition of more than a dozen grassroots and progressive groups comprised of approximately 1,500 constituents of the 14th District.
